Week of September 28th - October 4th
It was a pleasure meeting all of you yesterday. I look forward to seeing you all again in a month.
Here is what's on the schedule for this week:
***Midterm: The test will be open as of 12:01am on September 28th, and must be completed by October 4th at 11:59pm.
***Speech Topic Submission: You must have a topic for the Informative Speech Assignment chosen by Friday, October 3rd at 10:00am. I will post a message on my blog that will be titled: "Speech Topic" at some point this week. Please leave a message on my blog with your speech topic. I only have two restrictions for speech topics: 1). No medical issues and 2). No issues such as "gun control", "abortion", "drugs", etc... These topics we hear about ALL THE TIME and we probably don't want to hear about them again. Your topic should be one that can be researched. You will NEED TO HAVE 4 DIFFERENT SOURCES - AND ONLY ONE CAN BE FROM THE INTERNET. You will have to look for books, magazine articles, peer reviewed journal articles, etc... as sources for this speech. In other words, you will need to have credible research for your speeches.
***Self-Evaluation: You should post your self-evaluations by the end of this week on October 4th @ 11:59pm ON YOUR BLOG. No need to email it to me.
I will be posting a bit this week regarding your Informative Speeches, so please check back often. I have notes from class to help you along with the next speech (things to improve your grades). :) Have a great day!!!

Time Requirements for the Speech

I will see you all tomorrow at 11:45am in HGH223.
Have a great night!

Meeting on Friday & Speech Tips
Our meeting will be held in HGH223. This is Hugh Gillis Hall located on San Fernando and 5th Street. Please be there BY 11:45am so YOU WILL NOT BE LATE. We will be starting speeches shortly after 12:00pm. Class OFFICIALLY STARTS at 12:00pm.
PLEASE PRINT OUT a copy of the Demo Evaluation Form located on the HANDOUTS Page on Blackboard. Bring it to class on Friday so your speech can be evaluated. PRINT YOUR NAME AT THE TOP, FILL IN THE TOPIC SECTION, and hand it to me right before your speech. If you are feeling particularly ambitious, please bring extra copies in case someone in class forgets theirs.
VISUAL AIDS: What you are demonstrating will be your visual aid. For instance, if you speech topic is making cookies, you NEED TO BRING IN THE INGREDIENTS for making cookies. PICTURES WILL NOT WORK. You are REQUIRED to demonstrate something with your hands. Also, practicing with your visual aid will insure you are actually using your visual aid. I can't tell you how many speeches I have graded where students fail to use the visual aids they have prepared ahead of time.
NOTECARDS: You will be using 4x6 notecards ONLY during your speech performance. Please write out notecards that contain KEY WORDS ONLY. You SHOULD know your speech well enough to have ONLY key words on your notecards (DO NOT WRITE OUT YOUR SPEECH ON YOUR NOTECARDS). This is because you should have about an 85%-90% eye contact rate with your audience. PLEASE DO NOT USE YOUR OUTLINE as an aid to remind you of what you are talking about during the speech. NOTECARDS ONLY PLEASE.
VIDEO TAPE: You are required to bring in a VHS videotape for our class meeting. The tape is for your playback. Next week you have an assignment due that reviews your speeches. You need to watch your speech and post a Self-Evaluation onto your blog as an assignment (in ESSAY format).
PRACTICING: This week you should practice WITH YOUR VISUAL AIDS at least 7 times. If you do not practice with your visual aids, your audeince may be able to tell that you are unprepared. Also, practicing your speech OUTLOUD, not in your head, will help to make sure your points are solidified and you KNOW for sure what you are going to say during your speech.
VERBAL SOURCE CITATIONS: One of the reasons why you should have researched your speech is so YOU CAN MAKE VERBAL SOURCE CITATIONS while you are giving your speech. You should be citing ALL 4 SOURCES DURING THE COURSE OF YOUR 4-5 minute speech.
DEMONSTRATION DURING YOUR SPEECH: Please make sure you are TAKLING through your entire speech, even when you are demonstrating. Since your first speech is 4-5 minutes, you should be TALKING THE WHOLE TIME. We will be on a tight schedule on Friday, so please make sure you are WITHIN YOUR TIME FRAME of 4-5 minutes.
INTRODUCTION: In your introduction, please make sure you are USING AN ATTENTION GETTER at the start of the speech AND PREVIEWING ALL OF YOUR MAIN POINTS. Read over the speech assignment AND outline worksheet on the "Writing Page" on Blackboard for more information.
BODY of SPEECH: Make sure you are TRANSITIONING from one point to another with a TRANSITION.
CONCLUSION: During your conclusion, you should be REVIEWING THE MAIN POINTS YOU JUST TALKED ABOUT, and providing closure of the speech. Again, see the Outline Worksheet on Blackboard for more details.
I hope that these tips help you out for our meeting on Friday. I also hope that they Outline Worksheet will give you some guidance with how the speech should flow. Afterall, the outline is how we are "planning" or structuring our speech.
I will be emailing you back your outlines by Wednesday evening at the latest. So please, look over the comments I have made to improve your speeches. The reason why I required the outline prior to the speech meeting day is to catch any mistakes during the speech planning process.
I AM REALLY looking forward to meeting you all face to face. I may be updating the blog a couple more times this week with speech tips, so check back often.
Happy practicing! :)

Starting Next Week......
As a reminder, your OUTLINES ARE DUE by Monday, September 22 by 10am. You need to email me your outlines, which I will grade, give you feedback and then email back to you. The reason why your outlines are due before the speech is because if there are any issues with the outline (which plans your speech), you can have some feedback so there are no gross deviations from the assignment requirements. Please DO NOT wait until the last minute to turn in your papers. If there is an internet problem or submission problem and you end up turning your paper in late, you will receive a reduction in your grade no matter the excuse. I will be looking at the TIME down to the minute when papers are submitted. So please do me a favor, and yourself a favor, turn your papers in early.
There is an OUTLINE WORKSHEET that can be located on the Handouts Page on blackboard AND on the WRITING PAGE on blackboard. You should use this worksheet as a planner to make sure you have ALL components of the assignment complete. PLEASE REVIEW THE WRITING PAGE for submission parameters for your outlines. There are very specific instructions that need to be followed for submission.
OUR CLASS MEETINGS ARE MANDATORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OUR FIRST MEETING WILL BE ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 26th FROM 12:00pm TO 5:00ppm. You MUST be present for the entire class session in order to receive credit for participation for that day. These class sessions have been in the schedule since the first day of the semester, so make accommodations accordingly to attend the ENTIRE class session.
Check my blog this week for tips on the outline/first speech, and of course for my comments about your blog posts.

A few tips on Blogs
To make life a bit easier when trying to read other people’s blogs, there are a few options for you. Even though I am sure there are more options out there, and if you have other ideas, post them here. But, I will share with you a couple of options to help you keep track of the blogs of everyone in this class.
Option 1
Set up an RSS feed or Web Feed. If you have a gmail account (email through google), this is super simple to do. You go to Google Reader, enter your name and password, which is the same as your email address associated with gmail. It will ask you to start adding subscriptions. All you do is add the blog address, (ex. http://comm20onlinefall2008.blogspot.com/) and all of the blogs will appear. The cool thing about this is, when a new blog is posted, you will automatically get updates. All you do is log back onto Google Reader, and all ‘subscriptions’ that you have entered, in this case it should be everyone’s blog in this class, will show up as ‘unread’ when you log on. RSS feeds are awesome because they are updated every hour to so. This means that Google Reader checks your subscriptions on a continual basis at a set interval and will show up in your Google Reader account automatically so you can see who has blogged. I am sure there are many other RSS feeds out there, but this is the one I use. It’s pretty simple. Plus, when you log onto Google Reader the first time, it has a video that explains everything.
Option 2
Add all class members blogs to your blog, like I have on mine. You can add blog addresses by simply clicking on the blog links from my blog, open another widow to access your blog, add the option of having a blog list on your own personal blog, then you have your own blog list.
Option 3
Bookmark on your “Bookmarks” in your web browser all other people’s blogs in this class.
Option 4
Bookmark my blog in your web browser and link from there. (This is a good option, although not as good as using Option 1, because you get to see updates on my blog).
Happy blogging!!!

Choosing a Speech Topic
An example of past speech topics have been, origami, making salsa, demonstrating how to skateboard, martial arts, and any number of other things you can think of to DEMONSTRATE WITH YOUR HANDS. Here's the key, you must be able to demonstrate whatever it is you are doing in class. So, if you are making salsa, you need to actually make the salsa (the ingredients can actually be chopped ahead of time, but you must mix them together in class). Demonstrating means that you should be doing something with your hands, and NOT simply just talking through the steps.
So, by Friday, September 5th at 10:00am, please post a comment on this blog telling me what your topic is going to be. If you do not hear from me, your topic is approved and is fine. I will email those students who's topics I have questions about. Happy topic hunting! :)
Speech Buddy Website
http://www.cengage.com/sso/
Click, "Create an account" and follow the prompts from there. It will ask if you are a student or an instructor, obviously choose student. It will then ask you for some personal information (I think). When you create your account, PLEASE make sure you keep your log on information.
For those of you that have logged on and watched the videos already, where did you find your insert? And, was the process easy to get going?
UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Viewing the videos:
Once you are able to access the website, there should be something that says "Interactive Videos Activities". Click on that. Once the page loads, you should see a screen with a black square on the upper left hand side, and at the bottom there is a section with chapters. Roll your mouse over the number of the chapter you are looking for and click on it. An additional bar will pop up that has the numbers of the videos you are looking for. Click on the number of the video that corresponds with this weeks assignment and view the video. Of course you can view more than what's required - which will help you more in the long run with this course. I hope this helps!
