Week of October 26 - November 1
Good job on your speeches overall. I definitely noticed an improvement from the last speech. Keep in touch with my blog, as I will be posting tips for the next speech this week.
Here is what's on the schedule for this week:
1). Please post your self-evaluation to your blog by the end of this week.
2). Participate in this week's discussion:
Answer one in each of your three posts, at least 24 hours apart....
1). Speech Buddy: Review the following Interactive Videos, 11.1 and 11.2 on the Interactive Video Website. Respond to the ideas in the videos. What did you learn that could be helpful in your next speech?
2). Reflect on a public speaking event that you have attended recently, or one that you recall particularly well, in which the speaker used presentation media. How effective was the speaker's use of presentation media? How did the media add to the speech? Were there ways in which the presentation media distracted from the speech? How might the speaker have improved his or her use of the presentation media?
3). Pick on concept from the assigned reading that you found useful or interesting and discuss it.
Remember to post 2 responses to your colleagues blogs at least 24 hours apart.

Speech Tips Post #4
Hello Class!
A few more tips here for your speeches!
1). Please practice with a timer. Most people said that they practiced, but did not practice nearly enough. Take note of that! Also, if you are over or under the time limit -- for the Informative Speech, the time limit is 5 - 6 minutes. Please make sure you are ending your speech between 5 and 6 minutes.
2). Visual Aids - they are a MUST for every speech in this class. If you need to use powerpoint, please have your slides emailed to me NO LATER than 5pm on Thursday. I will open them up and save them to my computer. If there is a problem with the slides, I will email you back Thursday night, so PLEASE check your email to make sure your slides are safe!
3). Open your speech with an effective attention getter. The beginning of your speech should engage the audience and capture their attention. If you are confused about this, look up Attention Getters in your book.
4). I know I have said this before, but your introduction should most certainly introduce what you are going to talk about in your speech. More specifically, you should introduce ALL MAIN POINTS you are going to cover in your introduction.
5). On the same note, your conclusion should review ALL MAIN POINTS you just talked about.
6). Transitioning from one idea to the next should be clear and apparent during your speech.
7). PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not predispose your audience with, "Wow, I'm really nervous", or, "I should have practiced more". The VERY FIRST THING YOU SAY should be your attention getter!
8). CITE ALL 4 SOURCES in your speech - do it verbally!
9). Practice with your visual aids! Make sure you know when to switch a slide, or hold up your poster board.
10). Make sure you are presenting PROFESSIONALLY. Envision a person who is presenting something to a CEO, or a President of a company. How do you think they would present? By playing with their hair? Probably not! Would they tug at their clothing? Um, no! Would they repetitively say ummm? No. Imagine what a professional person looks like when presenting and mimic them.
And finally, I will be sending back your outlines no later than tomorrow night. Please look them over and make appropriate changes so that you can improve your speech. Your outline is a plan for your speech of course. So, if there are comments on what to change to enhance your speech, make those changes. I will be putting comments on your outlines that are from 2 categories - Category #1 - changes to make for your upcoming outline, and Category #2, changes you should make for your speech on Friday!
Have a great night!

Week of October 19-25
Wow, it seems like just yesterday that we were giving our first speeches in the class. But alas, it is time for our second speech, the Informative Speech! Here is what's on the schedule for this week:
***OUTLINES DUE BY MONDAY, OCTOBER 20th @ 10am***
Please DO NOT submit your outlines late!!!
Other than that, we have a mandatory meeting for ALL students on Friday, October 24th @ 12:00pm. Just like last time, please be on time. If you are late, you will be deducted points! We will be starting earlier than we did last time since we are all acquainted now.
If you are planning on using Powerpoint, I need your slides NO LATER THAN 5pm on Thursday, otherwise YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO USE POWERPOINT. I need to make sure the slides will open on my computer, so please plan ahead with that as well.
I will be posting updates and speech tips this week, so please look out for those. Additionally, please see ALL PAST SPEECH TIPS to make sure you are on track with your speech. I was quite lenient with the last speech, so please keep that in mind when planning and practicing for this speech.
One last thing, if I give you tips on your speech when I return your outline, please make the appropriate changes so you can better your grade.

Outline/Speech Tip #3
You MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST (was that emphatic enough?) include VERBAL research in your speech. This will most likely sound something like this: "In an article from cnn.com back in January, it was reported that 10% of all Americans will develop some kind of cancer in their life". The VERBAL RESEARCH or source citation is, of course, CNN.COM.
Referencing your source citations will bolster your credibility to your audience. For the coming speech, you ARE REQUIRED to have AT LEAST 4 source citations verbally, 4 on the reference page, and of course 4 in the body of your outline in APA source citation format. Do you see a pattern here? All 4 are going to be the same in your verbal speech as they are on the reference page and in the body of the text.
Here's another tip, which I covered in class on our last speech day: YOU MUST VARY YOUR SOURCES. This means that you can only have ONE internet source. The rest MUST BE books, magazine articles, newspaper articles, etc.... Email me if you have questions about sources.
Look out for the next speech tip. :)

Outline/Speech Tip #2
Here's the second tip for your speeches and outlines:
You should be aware of the overall structure of your speech. The book talks about choosing an ORGANIZATIONAL PATTERN. To be clear, you speech needs to have an organizational pattern.
What this means is, your main points should echo the organizational pattern you have chosen. Additionally, YOU SHOULD TRANSITION FROM ONE POINT TO THE NEXT. Here is an example: "Now that I have covered what lung cancer and it's mortality rate, I will explain what throat cancer is". Of course in this scenario:
I. Lung cancer can effect people from young to old and even people who haven't smoked.
II. Throat cancer is dangerous because it can be difficult to treat.
These would be your first and second main points.
In short, you need to transition your audience from your first main point to the second one, the second main point to the third one, etc.... DO THIS AUDIBLY when you are giving your speech. This will help your audience to follow the organizational pattern of your speech.

Outline/Speech Tip #1
I am going to start a series of posts titled "Outline/Speech Tip". Please keep track of these and take note of them so you can put the tips to great use when it comes to your outlines and speeches.
Now that you SHOULD be working on speech#2, there are some things to watch out for:
1). Your speech SHOULD have 4 sources cited in your speech VERBALLY! Make sure your sources are varied. This means that you should only have ONE internet resource. ALL OTHERS should be from different areas - magazines, newspapers, books, etc....
2). Your INTRODUCTION and CONCLUSIONS should be FULL NARRATIVE PARAGRAPHS. Basically what this means is that on your OUTLINE, you should write out A FULL PARAGRAPH for your introduction and another FULL PARAGRAPH for your conclusion. See the Outline Worksheet on Blackboard so you can note what kinds of things should be included in that. In short, your introduction paragraph should introduce your audience to your topic, AND cover the three main points in your speech. The conclusion should also be a full paragraph and summarize, or close your speech. In the conclusion paragraph you should review the things you just spoke about in the speech.
Look for more tips in the coming days. And, like I said, please keep track of them so you CAN GET FULL CREDIT ON YOUR NEXT ASSIGNMENT. I was REALLY lenient with the first assignment all the way around. This will not be so for the next speech, so we are really going to have to step up the quality a bit with our speeches.
Let me know if you need any clarification about what I have written here. :)
I hope y'all have a fabulous day!
