More outline tips

This should go without saying, but PLEASE review the assignment sheet for the Persuasive Speech I have posted on Blackboard. This assignment sheet (along with your book) will surely help you plan your speech.

It is IMPERATIVE that you follow one of the three organizational patterns listed on the assignment sheet (also see a post below about organizational patterns). Your speech MUST follow one of these organizational patterns.

I will be available all day tomorrow for questions.

A few days left....and another tip

You have a few days before your outlines are due. The due date is Monday, December 1st. You need to have your outlines emailed to me by 10am at the latest. Anything emailed after this time will be considered late, so PLEASE PLAN AHEAD.

Since the deadline for the final speech is a mere few days away, here is another tip. This is going to sound self-explanatory, but it needs to be said anyway:

Please read over the assignment sheet before turning in your outline to make sure you have met ALL REQUIREMENTS. The assignment sheet should be your ultimate guide for this assignment, so check with it often. In fact, once you are done with your outline, go over the assignment sheet one more time to make sure that you have completed everything on the assignment sheet. I grade directly from the assignment sheet.

Be sure you have everything needed in BOLD and in (PARENTHESIS) in the body of the outline, as I would be looking for these things specifically in your speeches.

I would like to see everyone earn 100% credit on the outline, so make sure to ask me questions if you have them. Check the past tips I have posted.

I will post another tip tomorrow. Until then.....

It is a good idea....

It would be a good idea if you reviewed a couple of the videos under Chapter 15 (Schooling Pro and Schooling Con). There are some REALLY good examples of what TO DO and of course, what NOT to do in a Persuasive Speech.

In the first video you will see Dixie present a speech. She uses some emotional appeals, but could have easily backed up here points with FACTS and STATISTICS. Watch it to see what I am referring to.

In the second video, Schooling Con, Robert also has some really good points and some weaknesses as well.

A couple of the MAJOR things to pay attention to is the way they both STATE THEIR PURPOSE IN THEIR INTRODUCTION OF THE SPEECH. You should be CLEARLY stating the purpose of your speech in your introduction (and OF COURSE, follow a clear ORGANIZATIONAL PATTERN, as noted in my previous post).

Watching these two videos will give you clear examples of what your final product (or final speech on December 5th) should look like. Please review those videos at least once, if not 2 or 3 times each. The videos will take approximately 10 minutes, and they will help you out tremendously!!!

More tips to come.....

Reasoning

Since you must include reasoning in your speech, and your book only includes a few types of reasoning, I thought I would add some types of reasoning that you can use. Some of these are quite easy to apply to your speeches, whereas a couple in the book may be hard to understand.

In addition to the ones listed in your book, you can certainly use any of these listed below. If you need more of an explanation of these types of reasoning, google the type of reasoning and a detailed explanation will come up. If it does not, message me and I can clarify things for you. Here they are:

Reasoning by Example
Uses examples to reach a conclusion about a group.
Many specific examples to make a generalization.
What is known about A, B, C and D will be true about all other members of the group.

Reasoning by Analogy
Uses similarities between two similar cases to draw a conclusion about a case.
A is like B, so what is true of A is also true, or will be true of B.

Causal Reasoning
Draws conclusions about the unknown effects of known causes OR about the unknown cause of known effect.

Sign Reasoning
Uses signs or clues to reach a conclusion about the existence (present, past, or future) of something.
Reasoning from known signs to unknown existence.

Reasoning by Criteria
Uses pre-established criteria to draw a conclusion about something.
Criteria can include principles, definitions, laws, rules, expectations, prior decisions, etc...

Week of Novmeber 23-26

This week should prove to be really beneficial for you. It is a 'work only' week, meaning that the only responsibility that you have this week is to complete your outline (which is due on Monday, December 1st by 10am). I have mentioned a few times over the last couple of days that I will be posting tips and reminders for your Persuasive Speech. Here is the first one:

Organizational Patterns

You have ONLY 3 choices for an Organizational Pattern for this speech.

1). Problem/Solution: This means that your first main point will present a Problem, and the second main point will present a solution.
Introduction (see the outline example on Blackboard to guide you)
I. Main Point #1 (present the Problem)
II. Main Point #2 (present the Solution)
Conclusion (be sure to include a call to action of some sort...see note below)

2). Problem/Cause/Solution: This organizational patter is like the first one, except there is an additional step. You are presenting a Problem, discussion a Cause, and then finally presenting a Solution to the problem. This is a really effective way to present a Persuasive speech.
Introduction (see the outline example on Blackboard to guide you)
I. Main Point #1 (present the Problem)
II. Main Point #2 (present the Causes for the Problem)
III. Main Point #2 (present the Solution)
Conclusion (be sure to include a call to action of some sort...see note below)

Note: For both the Problem/Solution and the Problem/Cause/Solution organizational patterns, you are including CREDIBLE research in your main points to back up your argument. Remember, THIS IS A PERSUASIVE SPEECH. THIS MEANS THAT YOU ARE TRYING TO CONVINCE YOUR AUDIENCE TO DO OR THINK SOMETHING DIFFERENTLY THAN THEY ALREADY DO. You need to PERSUADE your audience to DO or THINK something.

3). Monroe's Motivated Sequence: This is arguably one of the most persuasive organizational patterns you can use. It looks something like this:

Introduction (This is your Attention Step)
I. Main point #1 is your Need Step (similar to a Problem)
II. Main point #2 is your Satisfaction Step (similar to a Solution to the Problem)
III. Main point #3 is your Visualization Step (this is where you tell the audience what life would be like without your solution, or what it would be like with an alternative). The Visualization Step is psychological and connects well with your audience. You present a kind of 'hypothetical' situation here.
Conclusion (This is your Action Step) You will OVERTLY call the audience to action in some way.

Note#2 - for EACH of these organizational patterns, you MUST call your audience to action in some way. You MUST tell them what they need to do next. Should they write their senators? Should they support their local organizations in some way? Have a CLEAR call to action. Even with the P/S or P/C/S patterns, YOU MUST TELL THE AUDIENCE WHAT TO DO NEXT. You are Persuading your audience and with this comes the responsibility to present data and CREDIBLE information to convince them to change something.

If you have questions about this, please comment on my blog post here so everyone can see the questions and answers. There are NO stupid or dumb questions, so please ask ANYTHING that is on your mind or anything that you need clarification of.

Persuasive Outline Reminders

I sent out an email, hopefully everyone has received it. I posted an example outline on Blackboard for the Persuasive Speech. The example has a few flaws, but was an overall good example of what your outline should look. A couple of the flaws (of which there are a few more) are:

*The outline does not include Credibility as it should be labeled in Bold and in Parenthesis in the body of the outline.

*Each point should only have one sentence. The outline example I have posted did not follow this rule. There are quite a few multiple sentence points in the outline.

As a reminder, the outline IS DUE ON MONDAY, DECEMBER 1st @ 10am.

Keep in close contact with my blog over the next week for more tips for a successful Persuasive Speech. :)

Grades, Grades and more Grades...

I have received a few emails over the last week with inquiries about grades. Here is the beautiful part about online classes.......your grades are always available to you. You can calculate your grade by adding up all of YOUR POINTS and DIVIDE THAT BY THE TOTAL NUMBER OF POINTS POSSIBLE. By doing this you will figure out your total percentage in the class.

Now is a good time to see where you stand in the class. I encourage every person in the class to log onto Blackboard and check out your grade. By doing this we may see something we really like, or maybe something we don't like so much.

BEFORE YOU LOG ONTO BLACKBOARD.....READ THE NEXT STATEMENT PLEASE!!!!!

We have already covered 605 points in the class. That mean we have approximately 395 points to go. If your grade is calculated out to a percentage that you "don't like", you STILL HAVE TIME TO RAISE YOUR GRADE. Here is what we have left in the semester:

*Discussion week November 16-22 (this week)......25 points
*Persuasive Outline.......40 points
*Persuasive Speech 250 points (yes, you read that correctly....250 points is A LOT)
*In class meeting for the Persuasive Speech........10 points
*Self Evaluation #3......10 points
*Discussion week December 7-10......25 points
*Final Exam.......35 points

Total points left: 395!

The key for those of you that WANT to raise your grade - participate in everything we have left in the course. Also, the Persuasive Speech has quite a few points associated with it, so please keep in touch with my blog over the next week or so for updates and tips for the next speech.

Speeches have overall improved since the start of the semester, which is a good thing. This last and final speech in the course should exhibit EVERYTHING you have learned so far in the course.

Let me know if y'all have any questions. :)

What did you learn that could be helpful in your speech? What types of appeals were used? How did the speaker connect with the audience?

· Reflect on a recent discussion youve had in which you tried to persuade others to accept your point of view. What type or types of reasoning did you use? How well did your reasoning work?

· Pick one concept from the assigned reading that you found useful or interesting and discuss it.

Getting an Early Start

Hello class! Here are some blogs who have posted already. Go ahead and stop by to comment to get an early start to the week!

Penny B
ShidaBoo
The Blabbering Student

Let's congratulate these folks for getting a jump on the week! :) Nice job everyone!

Reminder: Some of you are doing exceptional in this area, but as a reminder, try to keep up with your blog posts. Blogging is fairly easy, and has quite a few points associated with it. If you will notice on the syllabus, there are 250 points associated with blogging. While 5 points here and there do not seem like a lot of points, they can quickly add up and drop you down an entire letter grade or two. In short, try to keep up with your blogging. :) I can't wait to read the rest of your blogs this week.

Week of November 9-15

***Read Chapter 14, Speaking to Persuade. This chapter is highly applicable to your next assignment.

***Participate in this weeks discussion.

Answer one in each of your three posts, at least 24 hours apart:

· Update the class on your speech progress. What are you researching? What are your main points? How do you plan on beginning and ending your speech? How are you going to persuade your audience towards your point of view (hint: use the assigned reading to help you answer this part of the question).

· How are you immersed in a sea of persuasion? Give some examples of persuasive messages youve received in interpersonal, public speaking, and mass media contexts. What can you do to become a more critical consumer or persuasive messages?

· Pick one concept from the assigned reading that you found useful or interesting and discuss it.

· Remember to post 2 responses to your colleagues blogs at least 24 hours apart.
